Add PhotosThe Church of São Francisco de Paula (in English: Saint Francis of Paola), also referred to as the Convent of São Francisco de Paula, is located at Rua Presidente Arriaga, 86, in the parish of Estrela in Lisbon, in the historic area of the Pampulha neighbourhood. It belonged to the Order of Minims and was built where a chapel once stood to support its hospice and which, subsequently, upon being converted into a regular convent, underwent changes at the expense of Queen Mariana Victoria de Borbón, wife of King José I of Portugal, with works started in 1743, completed in April 1765, and inaugurated on May 4 of the same year. The facade of the church has two bell towers and inside you can see some works by Vieira Lusitano. The ceiling of the nave is completely filled with paintings. Various marbles and gilded carvings were used to decorate the interior of the church. Inside, it is also worth highlighting the tomb of the aforementioned Queen Mariana Victoria. This tomb, the work of Machado de Castro, is classified as a National Monument.
