Born "3I5 m. 1. Pantludw (L. Ruck, Esq.), in whose grounds is a magnificent y(;w-tree, 32 ft. in girth." near Machynlleth.

First wife of Francis Darwin, a son of Charles Darwin; the daughter of Lawrence Ruck of Machynlleth, and Newington, Kent and Mary Anne Matthews. Married to Francis Darwin on 23rd July, 1874 at All Souls, Langholm Place, London; she gave birth to Bernard Darwin on 7th September, 1876 and subsequently died.

"Frank married and brought his charming young Welsh bride, Amy Ruck, ... had been schoolfriends of Amy's brothers, and had visited her family at Pantlladw." (qv Edna Healey, 2001)

[Sir Francis Darwin was elected as a Fellow of the Linnean Society on the 2nd of December 1875. This was published as follows: "1875. Dec. 2. Darwin, Francis, M.B. Down, Beckenham, Kent." in: The Linnean Society of London: List of the Linnean Society of London, 1876. [London:] Printed by Taylor and Francis, Red Lion Court, Fleet Street. p.10.]

Amy Richenda Darwin (nee Ruck) is buried in Holy Trinity Church, Corris, 'Northern' Wales; in her letters to him she slips easily into Welsh; Pantlladw was paradise, her home a 'tiny grey house set on a little plateau carved out of a hill side'." (qv Edna Healey, 2001).

According to a letter written by Charles Darwin to his close friend, Joseph Dalton Hooker: " I never saw anyone suffer so much as poor Frank. He has gone to N. Wales to bury the body in a little church-yard amongst the mountains".

Gravestone reads: "Gwywa a gwelltyn syrth y blodewyn ond gair ein Duw ni a saif byth" or "the grass withereth, the flower fadeth but the word of our god shall stand for ever" (from Isaiah).

Her son Bernard (1876 - 1961) is buried at St Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Downe, as is his wife Elinor Monsell, who taught her husband's cousin Gwen Raverat engraving; nearby is Down House, the home of the Darwin family, where Amy died. Other Darwins buried at Downe include: Charles Waring Darwin; Elizabeth Darwin; Emma Darwin, Charles Darwin's wife, Erasmus Alvey Darwin; Mary Eleanor Darwin; Henrietta (Etty) Darwin, later Litchfield - her husband is buried in the English Cemetery in Cannes, France.

AMY RICHENDA DARWIN, NEE RUCK, SHOULD NOT BE CONFUSED WITH A RELATIVE: 'BERTA RUCK' or 'Amy Ruck' [married name: Oliver].

Amy Roberta [Berta] Ruck (1878–1978), novelist, was born on 2 August 1878 at Murree, Punjab, India, the eldest child of Arthur Ashley Ruck, a lieutenant in the Isle of Man regiment (8th foot), and his wife, Elizabeth Eleanor, daughter of Robert West D'Arcy, a colonel in the Bombay grenadiers. They had seven further children: three sons and four daughters.

'Berta Ruck', as she came to be known, was brought to Britain at the age of two and lived for a while at Panlludw, Merioneth, near Machynlleth, the home of her paternal grandmother, Mary Anne Ruck (née Matthews), and both the place and the person were to make a deep impression on her."

[Arthur Ruck's sister: Amy Richenda Ruck married Francis Darwin and died giving birth to their son Bernard Darwin.]
