Son of Beebee Pangborn (sometimes spelled "Beeby" and Susannah Knapp. Family history places David's birth in 1803; his Massachusetts death record indicates he was born in 1804.

Some transcripts of Elmwood Cemetery burials identify David and his family as "Paugborn".

David Pangborn moved to Burlington around 1830, and opened his business as a cabinet maker, piano case maker, and for a short time, undertaker. He was appointed Sexton of Elmwood cemetery in 1842..

David married Elizabeth Farrington on August 27, 1830. Their children include Laura A. Pangborn Lawrence (or Laurence).

In 1843 - 1846, David was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives, serving as jail commissioner for Chittenden County. He served as Burlington's representative to the Vermont legislature from 1848 to 1849, but left Vermont and his family in 1850. He initially settled in California, where , ahe had gone to sjpport his investment in a quartz crushing machine "but he returned poorer than when he went.
By 1870, David was living with his daughter Mary Elizabeth in Racine, Wisconsin. He eventually moved to Amherst to live with a daughter identified by the Globe as "Mrs. Professor Peabody. of the Amherst Agricultural College."

Obituaries were published in several Newspapers, inclding the Rutland Daily Globe (Rutland, Vermont) on May 8, 1874, and The Burlington Free Press (Burlington, Vermont) May 7, 1874.

The David Pangborn house at 88 South Willard Street in Burlington, built about 1840 for David, still stands in 2013.
