Rev. Samuel Leander Westerfield (1760-1832)
Aged 71y

Husband of Catherine Monfort Westerfield (1762-1844).

Rev. Samuel Leander Westerfield (109513373)(son of Jacobus Westervelt/Westerfield and Maria Demaree) was born February 18, 1760 in Utrecht, Long Island, Kings County, New York, and died February 8, 1832 in Eaton, Ohio (Washington Township), in Preble County, Ohio. He died at age of 71 years, 11 months and 20 days. He died at the Preble County Infirmary and was buried in the Preble County Infirmary Cemetery (now called the Preble County Home Cemetery). He never had a headstone. He spent the first half of his life living in New York and New Jersey. He moved to New Jersey with his family at age seventeen. While in New Jersey, he served in the Revolutionary War. In 1780, as a young man at age twenty he accompanied his parents to Louisville, Kentucky. While in Kentucky he became a Presbyterian Minister. He married Catherine Monfort Westerfield (5470482) on February 28, 1782 in Jefferson County, Kentucky. By the end of 1789, Rev. Samuel Leander Westerfield and Catherine Monfort Westerfield had left Kentucky and migrated to Hamilton, Ohio. He later migrated to Clermont County, Ohio. He spent the second half of his life living in Ohio. Their decision to leave Kentucky came after Samuel's father, Jacobus (Westervelt) Westerfield and nine other Westervelt/Westerfield family members were killed in an Indian raid near what is now known as Thixton, Kentucky, (Jefferson County). This tragedy is recorded in American history as the Westervelt Massacre. In about 1807, Samuel Leander and Catherine Monfort Westerfield relocated to Preble, Ohio. Rev. Samuel Leander Westerfield was an Ordained Presbyterian Minister and frequently traveled between Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois throughout his life. Rev. Samuel Leander Westerfield died in Preble, Ohio on February 8, 1832. He died at the Preble County Infirmary and was buried in the Preble County Infirmary Cemetery (now called the Preble County Home Cemetery). He never had a headstone. Shortly after Samuel's death, his widow, Catherine Monfort Westerfield moved to Knox County, Illinois to live with son Rev. Peter Westerfield Sr. Rev. Samuel Leander Westerfield and Catherine Monfort Westerfield had 12 children together.

More About Samuel Leander Westerfield:
Baptism: March 05, 1760, New York, New York.
Ordination: Presbyterian.

Wife: Catherine Monfort Westerfield (5470482) (b. February 26, 1762 in Hunterdon, New Jersey, d. July 17, 1844 in Knoxville, Illinois (Knox County).
Catherine’s Father: Peter Monfort (b. 1725 in Long Island, NY ; d. 1769 in York County, PA).

Samuel's Father: Jacobus (Westervelt) Westerfield (later changed to Westerfield) (141718166) (b. July 1, 1737 in Tappan, New Jersey (Bergen County). d. June 27, 1780 in Thixton, Kentucky (Jefferson County). Jacobus (Westervelt) Westerfield was killed in Thixton, Kentucky (Jefferson County) by Indians allied to the British (research the Westerfield Massacre). Many people wonder why they changed their last name from Westervelt to Westerfield? My late uncle, Robert Edward Westerfield provided the answer to this mystery. As the Revolutionary War approached the British became allies with the Indians in North America. The British government put a 5 pound bounty for the scalps of anyone who had the last names provided by the British. There were several Dutch names on this "Hit List", so the Dutch Reformed Church decided to do something about these murders. The DRC authorized several names on this list to change their last name so as to confuse the enemy. The Westervelt name was on this list along with other Dutch names. The Allied Indians became confused because if your name was not on the list they would allow you to escape (because you were not of any value to them). The DRC did however have strict guidelines on the name changes. They could only be done at time of marriage or birth and the name change was not reversible.
Jacobus' Father was: Jacobus Van Westervelt.
Jacobus' Mother was: Debora Van Schywen.

Samuel's Mother: Maria Demaree (later changed to Mary Westerfield). She also used the name "Marie". She was the daughter of Samuel Demaree and Lea Demarest. Jacobus' Mother and Father were married on November 5, 1754 in Schraalenburg County, New Jersey.
