As a teenager, Robert changed his name to honor his hero, atheist Robert Ingersoll (Robert's father was a minister and traveling evangelist who had been disgraced after consorting with prostitutes. The senior Irwin founded the Fire-Baptized Holiness Church in Anderson Co., SC in 1898--the first documented integrated denomination in the United States. It is now known as the International Pentecostal Holiness Church.) At birth, Robert received the name Fenelon Arryo Seco Irwin. The father deserted the family when Fenelon was a child.
