Homer man fatally stabbed

Times Ruston Bureau
HOMER--A 68-year-old retired oilfield worker, was found slain in a pool of blood outside his home early Saturday, apparently stabbed to death with a 12-inch butcher knife from his own kitchen.

Willard T. Braswell was pronounced dead at the scene by Claiborne Parish Coroner Don Haynes. The victim's wife, Lurlene, was treated at Homer Memorial Hospital for two stab wounds, said Sheriff J.R. "Snap" Oakes.

"We don't have any sign of forced entry or anything missing in the house...makes it tough," Oakes said.

Officers converged on the Braswell's white frame home after a telephone call at 1:20 a.m. reported a "burglary-prowler" disturbance.

Oakes said Mrs. Braswell, although wounded, went next door to her daughter's home. They returned and found Braswell's body outside near the garage.

Oakes said bloodhounds were unable to pick up a scent because too many people had been in the area. He said the suspected murder weapon was found in the yard.

Police Chief C.W. Wilson, visibly shaken, said this is the first murder of this type in Homer in seven years.

"This type... we're not accustomed to this... it's something we don't expect to happen in our town, but it has," Wilson said. "You wonder why he picked the Braswell."

Investigators were still at the murder since late Saturday.
