After attending Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Columbia, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and the New England Conservatory of Music, Allen received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Alfred University, where he later became a professor. He began teaching drama at the Egan School of Music, Drama, and Fine Arts in Los Angeles in 1913. He started his acting career in silent films with Universal City and signed with them in 1915. He was 50 years old when he appeared in his first film, and played Luis Lopez in "The Yoke of Gold". He usually played fathers, villains, or ranch owners in his character parts. He starred in 106 films before retiring in 1935. After leaving the film industry, he became a children's playwright and author.
