Famous for being the former second officer on Titanic.

David 'Davy' Blair was born on the 11th of November 1874, in Newport on the Isle of Wight. His father was Lt. Col. John Blair and his mother Clementina Ross Stewart.
In March 1890, at the age of 15, he began his apprenticeship with H Fernie & Sons of Liverpool, also known as The Liverpool Shipping Co Ltd.
It was not until May 1896 that the 21-year-old acquired his first position, as second mate, on a steam ship, the SS Baltazan.
In December 1901, Blair then decided to apply for his Masters Certificate in Leith, Edinburgh, passing on the 10th of December 1901. This was a pivotal moment in Blair's career, as he then applied to join the White Star Line, doing so on the 22nd of January 1902.
His first White Star ship was the SS Doric, which he served aboard in the capacity of fourth officer from the 22nd of January 1902.
He was originally suppose to be the Second Officer on the Titanic with Charles H. Lightoller as the First Officer and William M. Murdoch as the Chief Officer.
However when the White Star Line brought Henry T. Wilde on board and made him the Chief Officer, the demoted Murdoch to First Officer, Lightoller to Second Officer, and David Blair was forced to leave the Titanic.

Before he left the Titanic, he took away with him the key to the crow's nest telephone and he also seems to have stowed the lookout's binoculars in his cabin. Which turned out to be a factor in the Titanic disaster.

Out of the officers that were demoted by Wilde, only Lightoller survived.

In 1914 Blair was aboard the Oceanic with Lightoller during World War I when she ran aground. Blair was the navigator at the time and was made to shoulder the blame at the subsequent court martial.

David Blair passed away in 1955.
