John Newton Pitts was born in Huntsville, Alabama on February 22, 1847 the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Romines Pitts. Prior to the Civil War his parents owned a plantation in Alabama. During General Sherman's march through the south the local courthouse was burnrd down and all records were destroyed. After the Civil War the Pitts could not prove ownersip of their property. They became victims of carpetbaggrs and looters and lost their plantation. When he was sixteen years old, John Newton Pitts left home to work on the railroad in Water Valley, Mississippi. Because of his untiring industry he became an Engineer on the Illinois Central Railroad before his eighteenth birthday. When he was twenty eight years old he left the railroad and went to work for the Boyden Lumber & Milling Company in Neeleysville, Missouri. John Newton Pitts came to Pontoosuc, Illinois sometime after 1891 to become Postmaster.

On October 14, 1891 John Newton Pitts married Mary Lillian Gardner, a native of Illinois, in Poplar Bluff Missouri. They had ten children: Ralph Edwin (1892-?), Emiline Pearl (1893-1894), James Thomas (1895-1961), Karl Newton (1897-1944), Beatrice Eleanoire (1898-1973), Inez Irene (1900-1979), Dewey Hobson (1901-1965), Mary Ann (1903-1984), Frank Gilbert (1906-1906), and Fred Gail (1906-1969). Mary Lillian Gardner Pitts died on November 13, 1949 and is buried in Pontoosuc cemetery in Pontoosuc, Illinois.

In later years John Newton Pitts worked as a farmer and teamster in Hancock County Illinois until poor health forced him to retire. He died on August 27, 1927 and is buried in Pontoosuc cemetery in Pontoosuc, Illinois.
