NIECE OF HERNDON DIES AT RESIDENCE

Mrs. La Omi D. Herndon Brown, niece of William H. Herndon and granddaughter of Archer G. Herndon, sr., one of the "Long Nine," famous in Illinois history, died at 12:45 p.m. yesterday at her residence, 1613 Whittier avenue. She was 86 years old. In failing health for the last two years, Mrs. Brown had been seriously ill for three months.

A resident of Sangamon county for eighty-three years, Mrs. Brown was born Nov. 27, 1852, in DeWitt county. Her parents were Archer G., jr., and Roanna R. (Robbins) Herndon. Her father's eldest brother was William H. Herndon, for many years the law partner of Abraham Lincoln. Her grandfather, Archer G. Herndon, sr., was state senator in 1836 and was one of the "Long Nine" who were instrumental in moving the capital from Vandalia to Springfield. Lincoln was the leader of this group, so dubbed because of their extreme height.

When Mrs. Brown was 3 years old, her family moved to a farm two miles east of Springfield, were they resided for several years. In 1868 they moved to a farm near Rochester and she lived there, until 1902, when she came to Springfield. She since had resided at the Whittier street address.

On Feb. 3, 1904, she was married to James D. Brown, who survives, together with two sisters, Mrs. Mary Thornton, Rochester, and Mrs. Delia Hudson, Columbus, O.; and several nieces and nephews.

Remians were removed to the Metcalf & Lemon funeral home where services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Mrs. Brown was a lifelong member of the Methodist church.
