With Louis's death in 1227, his brother Henry Raspe assumed the regency due to the minority of four year old Hermann. Henry managed to officially succeed his brother after the death of Elizabeth in 1231. Hermann never reigned and died ten years later; some historians have accused Henry of poisoning the youth.
His titles included:
1227 Titular-Markgraf von Meißen
1234 Graf von Hessen-Gudensberg
1238 Landgraf von Thüringen
In 1238/39 he was briefly engaged to Margaret (born 8 August 1270 – in Frankfurt am Main in late 1237,), daughter of Roger Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor.
On October 9, 1239, he married Helene of Brunswick (* March 18, 1223; † 6 September 1273, buried in the Franciscan monastery in Wittenberg), daughter of Otto the child, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, she remarried in 1247/48 with Duke Albrecht I of Saxe-Wittenberg (died 8 December 1260).
