Mary Cuthill nee Bowes (daughter of James Bowes and Agnes Muir) was first married to Joseph Featherstone and sailed in 1853 aboard the 'Colinda' heading around South America to Victoria, Vancouver Island, as part of a group of miners who were employed by the Hudson Bay Company. The conditions on board were harsh and the actions of the captain led to the ship's passengers refusing to continue when they reached the port of Valdiva, Chile. The passengers were sent to Valparaiso, where Mary, now separated from Joseph, met John Cuthill whom she married in 1855. After his death in 1873, Mary and her two surviving daughters sailed on the 'Timaru' from Glasgow to Dunedin in 1874. The next year she married the widower William John Hessey. However they separated soon after. She set up, owned, and managed a hosiery manufacturing business in Lees Street, Dunedin. Her daughters continued to run the factory after her death. She returned to the surname Cuthill but the name Hessey also features in some records.
