A dentist, he served as Grand Master in the Masons. During the Civil War, he was Sergeant of Captain Lamkins Company of Virginia Light Artillery. He joined 1 June 1861 at Amelia Courthouse. He was sixteen years old. He was wounded near Pocataligo, South Carolina, in 1862. After the war, he pursued a journalism career as reporter in New York City. He left that for the more certain profession of dentistry to support his young and growing family. He married Lucy Jefferson in 1864 and they had thirteen children. In 1903 he had published a volume, "Tuckahoe, a Old Fashioned Story of Old Fashioned People." Later in life he lived on West Grace Street in Richmond.
