Businessman, Horseman, Soccer, Hockey, and Basketball Owner. Steve Stavro was born in Gabresh, Aegean Macedonian, and emigrated with his family to Toronto, Ontario. The Stavros opened a small butcher shop, which, under Steve's leadership, grew to be a chain of warehouse-style grocery stores. Stavro ventured into horse racing with his Knob Hill Stables and achieved considerable success for such a small racing outfit. His friendship with Harold Ballad, the Toronto Maple Leafs owner, led to his being appointed to a trio of executors of the Ballard estate. Through some intricate boardroom work, Stavro emerged as the owner of the hockey team. In time, he also acquired the Toronto Raptors and the arena the team was building. Under Stavro, the hockey operation was revitalized, and took many steps to restore pride in the operation. In his later years, Stavro withdrew from public life by selling his stakes in the sports teams and closing the Knob Hill grocery chain. Stavro was honored by the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame in 2005 by being named to their Builder's category. After his death, the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame announced Steve Stavro's enshrinement as a builder in their institution.
