A Barrister-at-Law by trade, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 27 Jan 1915 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Lieutenant Strong served in France with the Eaton Motor Machine Gun Battery of the Canadian Machine Gun Corps.

Lieutenant William Strong is commemorated on Page 543 of Canada's First World War Book of Remembrance.
