Katherine Stevens Crawford, called Kate, was a daughter of Reverend Marquis de Lafayette Crawford (1823-1904) and his wife Emeretta C. "Emma" Kimball (1829-1906).

Kate was teaching school at Salado, Bell County, Texas, when she met Rev. Zachary Clay Taylor (1850-1919), who was then preparing for foreign mission work. They were married on Christmas Day, 1881, and the Baptist Church commissioned them to travel to Brazil. They arrived there in 1882 and helped organize a Portuguese-speaking Baptist church. Besides other duties, Kate translated evangelistic materials from English to Portuguese. She died in 1894 from cancer.

Kate Crawford and Zachary Taylor had four children:

1. Tarleton Broadus Taylor (24 Aug. 1885-18 April 1968) married Marguerite Mae "Margie" Flournoy (1888-1975), lived at Waco, Texas. Buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Waco, Find A Grave # 128024435

2. Mabel Taylor (2 Feb. 1888-6 Oct. 1930) She was a school teacher like her mother, and lived with her brother Tarleton and his family in Waco, Texas. Also buried at Oakwood, Find A Grave # 63240884

3. Eschol Taylor (22 Sept. 1890-14 Sept. 1919) She studied music at Baylor University and at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Leipzig, Germany. Taught piano at Baylor 1911-13 and 1914-19. Along with her father and stepmother perished in the great Corpus Christi hurricane of 1919. Oakwood, Waco, Find A Grave # 63240869

4. Marquis Barton Taylor (8 May 1892-2 January 1964) married Sarah Cox (1898-1998), lived at Fort Worth, Texas. Buried Laurel Land Memorial Park, Fort Worth, Find A Grave # 77736655

While I believe Zachary and Kate lived primarily in Bahia, Brazil until her death, and he returned later and remained until 1909, they appear to have made various visits to the United States. While Tarleton was born in Brazil in 1885, and Eschol was born there in 1890, Mabel appears to have been born in Kentucky in 1888, and Marquis in Bell Co., Texas in 1892.

After Kate's death, Rev. Taylor married Laura G. Barton and continued his missionary work in Brazil until 1909. They were living in Waco, Texas in 1910. Zachary, Laura and Eschol perished in the great hurricane that struck Corpus Christi, Texas on 14 September 1919.

In her short life, Kate Crawford Taylor contributed greatly to advancing the Christian faith in a strange land. She was truly a Christian soldier who marched on as long as she could. May God bless her.
