Funeral service for Mrs. Alma Francis Fields, who died Wednesday, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bateman Funeral Chapel in Gresham.
Mrs. Fields was born in Portland in 1890, was graduated from St. Helens Hall and went to San Francisco where she studied piano with Emlyn Lewys and voice with Madam Abbie Carrington of La Scala Opera fame.
She was signed to appear opposite Jack Gilbert in “The Wolf” and later with Shirley Mason in “The Sisters.” Twentieth Century Fox loaned her to the “Mission Play” at Alhambra, Calif., where, under the guidance of Tyrone Power, father of the late screen star of that name, she starred in that production for three years. Her radio career included appearances on the Maxwell House program, Standard Symphony Hour, and in her own show on station KFI in Los Angeles.
Klaw and Erlanger signed her for lead roles in such Broadway musicals as “The Pink Lady,” “The Little Cafe,” and “Fads and Fancies.”
She toured Italy’s operatic circuit in the lead soprano roles in “LaBoheme,” “Faust,” “Madame Butterfly,” and “Pagliacci.”
She returned to this country in 1934 and was married to Kenneth N. Fields, a forest ranger. They lived on a berry farm west of Sandy, where Mrs. Fields divided her time between teaching in Portland and in her farm home studio, known in the mountain area as “The Little Milan.”
Mrs. Fields was a member of Eastern Star and numerous musical organizations, including Oregon Music Teachers Association, Progressive Music Teachers, and the Mozart Club. She founded the Sandy Music Club for Oregon Federation of Music Clubs.
Survivors include her niece and nephew, Nancy and Martin Clark of Portland, and four first cousins, Virginia, Bill and Joseph Wilson of Portland and Ruth Scaiefe of Arlington, Calif.
