Correctional Officer Kristopher Moules died after he and an inmate fell down an elevator shaft during a struggle inside of the Luzerne County Correctional Facility.

The inmate, who was in jail for failing to register as a sex offender, attacked Officer Moules. The two crashed through an elevator door and fell several floors to the bottom of the elevator shaft. Officer Moules was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The inmate also died as a result of the fall.

Officer Moules had served with the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for 10 months.

LARKSVILLE — Kristopher D. Moules, 25, of Allen Drive, Larksville, passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 18, 2016.
Born Nov. 2, 1990, he was the son of Kenneth R. Moules and Kitty Moules and the brother of Kenneth R. Moules II.
Kris graduated from Wyoming Valley West High School in 2009 and Youngstown University in 2014. He also attended Lackawanna College from 2009 to 2012.
He honorably worked at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility as a corrections officer from September 2015 until his passing. He was a baseball coach at Lackawanna College, Scranton, and for the MVP Sports Academy, Exeter, worked as a valet at Mohegan Sun Casino and was also a proud employee of the Wyoming Valley Country Club.
Kris was a varsity baseball, soccer and ice hockey player for Wyoming Valley West High School, as well as playing baseball for Lackawanna College, where he co-captained their 2012 World Series team. He then proceeded to continue his education at Youngstown State University, where he played baseball for two years.
He had many passions in life, which included sports, the outdoors and spending time with his friends.
Kristopher was preceded in death by his grandparents, Kenneth and Geraldine (Serhan) Moules; Joseph M. and Catherine (Pradel) Fortune; and beloved cousin, Jonathan A. Moules.
He is survived by his parents and brother, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, whom he so dearly loved.
The Moules family would like to extend their gratitude to the paramedics that arrived on the scene, as well as the emergency room staff at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Also, a special heartfelt thank you to the corrections officers who stood by Kris until the family was notified and arrived at the hospital.
Honorary visitation for all uniformed officers will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday at the Wyoming Valley West High School gymnasium, Plymouth. Public visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Wyoming Valley West High School gymnasium. An honorary funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, also from the Wyoming Valley West High School gymnasium. Interment will be Tuesday in St. Mary's Antiochian Orthodox Cemetery, East St. Mary's Road, Hanover Township.
Contributions may be made in Kristopher's memory to the MVP Sports Academy, 1950 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, PA 18643, or to a charity of the donor's choice .
Arrangements are entrusted to Mamary-Durkin Funeral Service, 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre.
