On June 21, 1910, she married John Randolph Dos Passos, in Wilmington, Delaware. According to the (October 1910) newspaper announcement of their marriage, they met in Europe. According to modern sources, they met as early as 1883 in Washington, DC.
Lucy was the mother of John Roderigo Dos Passos (1896-1970), the popular writer. According to her will dated September 19, 1910, his given name was Madison. According to a book on the writer's life, John Randolph Dos Passos refused to acknowledge him as his son until around 1912 (see Virginia Spencer Carr's Dos Passos: A Life (1984)).
By late 1910, her son James Madison was a well-known lawyer living in New York City. He married Mildred Purcell Mitchell, daughter of William Tell and Lutie Pannell Mitchell, on April 11, 1931.
