His first wife: Elizabeth "Betsey: Marsh (1776-1812), daughter of Capt. William Marsh & Sarah Webster. Source: U.S. and International Marriage Records.

1. Jacob, who married Dorcas Drake, daughter of Noah Drake.
2. Sarah married Richard Manning, son of Isaac Manning, of Plainfield.
3. Bersheba (Bathsheba) married Isaac Line, son of Amos Line
4. Mary married Smith Line, brother of Isaac Line and son of Amos Line.

Ralph's marriage to wife Betsey Marsh, was out of the meeting, for this and being a near relative, they were under discipline of Rahway & Plainfield MM, but after many months of "deliberation" both concluded to retain their right of membership in the society. Betsey (Elizabeth Marsh) was born 24 AUG 1776, in Woodbridge and died 12 of 5m 1812, buried at Plainfield, Source: Ambrose M Shotwell; 1895. Robert Smith & Co., Printers And Binders, Lansing, Mich.’' pg121-122.

A few months after Elizabeth died, Ralph married 2nd, on 14 October 1812, Plainfield, New Jersey, to Osee (Osy) Tingley of Washington Valley, New Jersey.
Ralph & Osee Shotwell's children:
1. John
2. Betsey married James Bullman, near Rahway.
3. Anne married Alfred Berry, of Dover; of Plainfield.
4. David married Amelia Clark, daughter of David Clark, of Westfield.

Ralph was disowned, in 1813 by Plainfield MM for marrying his second wife (Osee), of whom was "outside" the Quaker guidelines. At the Monthly Meeting of 24 February 1813, it stated that he was no longer considered a Quaker for having married a non-Quaker. At the meeting of 18 March 1813, it was reported that he had been given a copy of "This Meetings testimony against him." There are no further Quaker records about him. Ralph served as Commissioner of Appeals in 1812 and 1822, and he served on the Township Committee for Warren Township in 1820, 1821, and 1822.

His Probate filed Oct 3 1826 in Somerset County. Inventory of Ralph Shotwell recorded Dec. 9th 1826, Book D of Somerset Inventories, p. 45, Township of Warren in the County of Somerset.
