Fred Lambert and Jule Foute Lambert, she was raised in Fort Valley, GA where her father was Superintendent of Schools. Earning a teaching degree from Shorter College, she married and was the beloved wife of Thomas William Kerby, Jr. He, a graduate of Georgia Tech and resident of Waycross served as an eventual Major with the Corps of Engineers in Hawaii during WWII and she joined him there. After the war, they returned to Waycross where he began Kerby Concrete and Construction Co. After giving birth to three sons, she returned to teaching and for many years was a much loved and dedicated teacher of 8th grade Georgia History at the Wacona School.

She cared passionately about her students and will be remembered by the many whose lives she touched. She earned her Master's Degree in History from Valdosta University and won a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship which took her abroad to study in India in 1973.
