James Timothy Vollink
November 6, 1945 - October 13, 2018

James Timothy Vollink, 72, of Traverse City passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at his home. Jim was born on November 6, 1945 in Holland, Michigan to the Gilbert and Gene (Homminga) Vollink. Jim will be remembered for his quick wit and strong opinions, but most of all for the love of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was also very grateful for the love of his life of 33 years, his wife Mary. He felt very blessed to be the dad of Tim, whom he was very proud of.

After graduating from high school, Jim joined the U.S. Navy where he became a Hospital Corpsman. He was joined with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines as a Medic for a tour in Vietnam. When he was honorable discharged from the service, Jim joined the Grand Rapids Police Department as an officer. He later transferred to the Holland Police Department, where he served for over 20 years. Moving with his wife to Traverse City in 1988, he held several jobs, one of his favorites being a school bus driver for TCAPS.

While battling combat stress disorder for most of his life, Jim found time to love life and the family and friends around him. He is a Soldier of the Salvation Army who has been “Promoted to Glory!”

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Mary, his son Timothy Vollink of Seattle, WA, his siblings, Linda (Joe) Baker of Waxahachie, TX, Larry (Jana) Vollink of Lansing, MI and Andrew (Holly) Vollink of Fort Wayne, IN. Also surviving are sisters and brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A funeral service honoring James will take place at 3:00 p.m., with visitation starting at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at The Salvation Army, 1239 Barlow St., Traverse City, MI 49686. Envoy Greg Irwin will officiate.

Military Honors conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Navy, Cherryland V.F.W. post 2780 and American Legion post 35.

The family is being cared for by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
