Professor Emeritus of Naval Architecture at M. I. T. since 1920, and a member of the M. I. T. class of 1877. Connected with M. I. T.'s faculty through 37 years, Prof. Peabody headed the naval architecture course from its beginning in 1893 until his retirement on a Carnegie Foundation pension 14 years ago. An authority on thermodynamics, he had written several volumes upon the subject. In 1878 he was professor of mathematics at Imperial Agricultural College, Sapporo, Japan, and in 1881 became assistant professor of engineering at the University of Illinois. Two years afterward he came to the M. I. T. faculty. He was a member of many learned societies.
