"WADE H. MOTE // Wade H. MOTE of 2116 Fifteenth avenue, Phenix City, died Monday morning at 12:10 o'clock at the residence of a sudden heart attack. // Mr. MOTE was born in Phenix City Jan. 27, 1897 where he had lived his entire life. He was the son of Mrs. Tilitha STEPHENS SAYERS and the late Robert Lee MOTE. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pearl MOTE, three sons, John W., David R., and Robert F. MOTE; seven daughters, Mrs. Lois GRAY, Misses Mattie Mae, Sarah, Ethel Lee, Abbie Jane, Ruth and Rebba Ann MOTE; two sisters, Mrs. Effie GAMMAGE, and Mrs. Hazel HICKMAN; two grandchildren, Misses Helen Fay and Patricia GRAY, all of Phenix City; also several aunts and uncles. // The body was moved to the Harris funeral home. Funeral arrangements will be announced." [Columbus (GA) Enquirer newspaper, Monday, 09 OCT 1939, p. 3. Most of this information is repeated in the funeral notice, issue of Tuesday, 10 OCT 1939, p. 5, which adds:] "Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Bethany Congregational church. // Rev. James RUMPH will officiate, and interment will be in Newsome cemetery, Phenix City. // The following will serve as pallbearers: C. R. HARDEN, George WALLER, Hugh MOSS, Alvin COOPER, Jim COOPER, and Mr. ARGO." [Also, the funeral information appeared in a recapitulation published in the issue of Wednesday, 11 OCT 1939, p. 2.]

Wade HAMPTON (1818-1902) was one of the largest slaveholders in the southeast shortly before the outbreak of the American Civil War, during which he served in the Confederate cavalry, attaining the rank of lieutenant general. He was elected the 77th Governor of South Carolina, serving 1876-79, and was subsequently elected as a U.S. Senator.
