Even though Charles is in a common grave, he was important to and for Australia. He was a major contributor in the country's early years, being appointed as the Governor of New South Wales from 1846 to 1854. During that time, he was responsible for almost the entire continent of Australia, until gradually states separated from NSW and came into being, such as Victoria in 1851. Fitzroy, Melbourne's first suburb, is named after him. Robert FitzRoy, governor of New Zealand and commander of H.M.S. Beagle for Charles Darwin's trip, was a half-brother to Charles.
