Gustavus Sr., graduated from College of New Jersey in 1805, which is now known as Princeton. He was a warm personal friend of Henry Clay, and while Clay was Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams, Gustavus was elected to bear important dispatches to Bolivia, at Bogota, in South America. Soon after his return he removed his family to Indiana and purchased a farm near Cherry Grove, 6 miles north of Crawfordsville.

Gustavus was the son of Hon. Gustavus Scott (1753-1800) of “Strawberry Vale”, a commissioner of Washington, D.C. appointed by President Washington. Gustavus married Margaret Hall Caile (1759-1826), daughter of Hall Caile (1733-1761) of Annapolis and his wife, Elizabeth Haskins (1733-1805).

Gustavus was the son of Rev. James Scott, Sr. (d. 1782) and Sarah Brown (1715-1784). James resided in Stafford Co., Virginia. Sarah was the daughter of Dr. Gustavus Brown II (1689-1762) and his first wife, Frances Fowke (1691-1744).
