Death of Captain Despard, J P.— It is our painful duty to record the death of Captain Philip Henry Despard, J.P., of Killough, County Down, which took place at Dublin on Wednesday. The deceased gentleman held the office of agent over several estates in the county Down; and in that capacity discharged his duties in manner which gave satisfaction to both the landlord and the tenant. His death deeply regretted by all who knew him. [Saunders's News-Letter - Saturday 25 June 1870, p.2]

Death of Captain Despard. —In our obituary today will be found the announcement of the death of Captain Philip Henry Despard, in the sixty-third year of his age. Captain had been for about five-and-twenty years past agent for Lord Bangor, and during the last four or five years agent also for Colonel Nugent, of Portaferry-house. While zealous for the interests of his principal, he was considerate towards the tenantry; for, with a certain military peremptoriness of manner, he possessed a really kind heart; and in all relations of life was a truly upright, conscientious, candid man, who spoke out his mind and acted up to his convictions. As a Magistrate, Grand Juror, and Poor Law Guardian took an active and useful part in the business of the county, and his death will be regretted by all with whom he was associated in the discharge his public duties. Our local Agricultural Society owed much of its success to his exertions as its hon. sec. for many years. [Downpatrick Recorder - Saturday 25 June 1870, p.2]
