James S Maxson moved to St. Lawrence county with his parents and siblings while he was still young. They lived in Hammond and in 1866, he married a widow, Julia Manning Miles, who had two children. They farmed in the Brier Hill area and had five more children, before James contracted measles, which resulted in pneumonia causing his death in 1890. He was well known and well respected in the area, and his death was a great shock to his family and the community as a whole. He was buried in Brier Hill Cemetery.
