A Shelby County Medical Examiner's finding has prompted police to open a homicide investigation into the death of a 27-year-old woman last week. The body of Aileen Michelle Branch, of 2314 Norman, was found outside a lounge at 2264 Springwood Cove at 1:25 am. Dec. 16. There were "no noticeable injuries" on her body, said Lt. John Garner of the homicide unit. However. the medical examiner later found evidence to indicate the death was a homicide. The cause of death was listed as strangulation. Branch, Garner said, was inside the lounge earlier and was found after the place closed. Police want to question patrons of the lounge. —Claris Conley

A drifter named Michael Townson confessed to the murder of Aileen Branch, 2019. He is currently serving two life sentences without the possibility of parole.
