ROCHESTER - Earl McMillan Taft, 83, of Rochester passed away Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Heritage Manor in Springfield.

He was born Jan. 10, 1926, in Rochester, the son of Delbert Gilson and Virginia Ann McMillan Taft. He married Marjorie Lorraine Lochbaum on Nov. 3, 1944, in Treasure Island, Calif.

Earl attended and graduated from Rochester High School in May 1944. During this time he raised and showed cattle in the local chapter of 4-H and did some livestock judging.

Earl served in the United States Navy during World War II from April 1944 through March 1946. He was commissioned to the USS Broadwater naval ship and stationed in the South Pacific Philippine Liberation.

Earl and his wife Marjorie moved to Virden, Macoupin County to begin his own farming operation. He purchased his first farm at Bunker Hill. Earl returned to Rochester in 1959 to work on his father's farm. This Rochester farm was his current residence. Earl and Marjorie were baptized, and were members of the Rochester Christian Church. They were owners and operators of Marg-Earl Concessions, established at the Illinois State Fair in 1964.

Earl was past president of the Sangamon County Senior Farmer Hall of Fame, a good standing member with Sangamon County Farm Bureau, Bradforton Co-Operative Elevator, and VFW Post 10302.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Wayne Taft in 1993 and Delbert Taft in 1998.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; five sons, Marvin Taft (Jackie) of Springfield, Gary Taft (Mary Jane) of Rochester, Patrick Mark Taft (Bonita) of Scottsdale, Ariz., Phillip Taft (Edna) of Dawson, and Alex Taft (Teresa) of Springfield; two daughters, Jane Smith (Marcus) of Nokomis and Penny Taft of Springfield; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Gilson Taft (Rita) of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Wilson Park Funeral Home in Rochester. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Rochester Christian Church, with David Upchurch officiating. Burial will be at Rochester Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Rochester Christian Church, Sangamon County 4-H, or the Alzheimer's Association.
