From biography in "Hymns of Our Faith" by William Jensen Reynolds, c. 1964, Broadman Press.:

Graduated from Oberlin College in 1938, and taught music there until retiring in 1864. His professorial career was foundational to the origins of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music established in 1865.
Composed the tune named "Maitland" in 1844 to which the hymn "Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone?" is set.
