Smith, James R., son of Jesse and Winnie Reeves Smith, b. July 27, 1843 in Gurnsey Co., Ohio came to Sullivan County in 1868. He was married to Mary E. Kimball (b. July 25, 1845 in Ohio) March 26, 1868. James enrolled in the Union Army Oct. 21, 1862 and served until July 24, 1865, being discharged on that date at Lexington, North Carolina. He served as a Sargent in Company B., 10th regiment, Ohio Cavalry. James R. was a farmer, settling first in Liberty Twp. but shortly moved to Clay Township where he and his wife lived the remainder of their lives. They brought their household goods and some stock with them, their first bed in this new country being the chicken coop with a feather bed spread on it. They were the parents of: Charles E., who married Flossie Senate; John A., who married Martha Calhoun; Winnie Jane, (Mrs. Miles Jaques). John A. and Winnie Jane were twins.
