KILLED IN ACTION
LIEUTENANT W. J. BLACKIE
Second-lieutenant Walter John Blackie, who was killed in action in the opening stages of the attack by the Second New Zealand Division on Cassino, was the elder son of Mr and Mrs J. S. Blackie, of Mosgiel. He was educated at the Mosgiel and Waitaki Boys' High Schools; and on leaving school accepted employment with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company at Dunedin, remaining with the firm until he joined the forces in 1940. Enlisting in the Scottish Regiment at the age of 18, he was soon promoted to the rank of sergeant, and gained his commission before reaching the age of 20. He left New Zealand in July, 1943, with the rank of sergeant, and was again commissioned in the field in December last. Lieutenant Blackie was an excellent shot and a keen lawn tennis player, but it was as a Rugby footballer that he was best known. While at Waitaki he played in the school second fifteen, and was also selected in the North Otago Third Grade representative team. On leaving school he joined the Taieri Football Club, and quickly reached prominence as a forward, being selected as a reserve player for Otago against Canterbury when he was 18. He was a deservedly popular young man of excellent character and promise. His father (Mr J. S. Blackie) is the Deputy Mayor of Mosgiel. His grandfather, Mr Walter Blackie, was a well-known figure in local body and farming circles on the Taieri over a lengthy period. [Otago Daily Times, Issue 25498, 30 March 1944, Page 6]
