CHICOPEE - Russell D. Jardine, 78, of Granby, formerly of 19 Reid Ave., Chicopee, died Friday, March 10, 2006 at the home of Randy and Mary Stone, with them, and his beloved cats at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 4, 1927 in Springfield, the son of the late David & Gertrude (Pease) Jardine. He was a Navy Veteran of WW II & Korea. He was a Petty Officer, 1c, attached to the Marines during WWII and was one of 27 men who climbed and captured Mt. Surabachi on Feb. 23, 1945 on the island of of Iwo Jima. He served with the LCI 458 Amphibeous Forces. During the Korean War, he served aboard the LSM 125 and the LSM 546. He was a recipient of two Purple Hearts and received Gold Stars from both President Truman and President Johnson. Russell was a graduate of Chicopee High School, and worked as a Truck Driver for Ondrick Construction of Chicopee and as a Mechanic for Minute Man RV in Hadley. He owned the largest privately owned collection of WWII bayonets and helmets from many different countries. He was also a collector of cleanser containers and pyrex dishes. He was a rollercoaster enthusiast, loved his trips to Lake George, and loved to give his friends nicknames. The brother of the late Donald and Marjorie M. Jardine, he is survived by a nephew, David Jardine and his wife Jody of Savoy, a great nephew, Dana David, two great nieces, Nichole Jardine and Brandy Funk. He is also survived by many friends, some since childhood, and shipmates from all over the world. A Funeral Service will be celebrated on Monday at 11:30am in the Ryder Funeral Home, 33 Lamb St., South Hadley with Burial to follow with Military Honors in the Chapel at the Mass. Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam at 1pm.
