He was born February 28, 1908, at Wiesthal, Germany, the son of Henry Durchholz and wife Rosalia.

Mr. Durchholz immigrated to the United States in 1926.

In 1930, he was united in marriage to Josephine Wolf of Lohr, Germany, at St. Roch's Catholic Church, St. Louis.

Mr. Durchholz's first job was with Laclede Gas Company.

He attended night classes and learned bookkeeping and later worked for a jewelry company, and in the produce business.

In 1934 he moved to Washington and began a produce business here. He also was a distributor of Dad's Root Beer and Double Cola.

He went to work for Mauntel's Department Store in 1948. The store, one of the oldest in the city, became a supermarket in 1953.

Mr. Durchholz purchased Mauntel's in 1959, and he and his son Eric were partners in the business until his retirement in 1978.

He was on the board of directors of the Washington Optimist Club and was active in the early years of the Washington Town and Country Fair.

Mr. Durchholz and his fellow Optimists created a favorite fair treat: The waffle and ice cream sandwich.

He was a longtime member of the Elks Club 1559.

Mr. Durchholz was a member of St. Francis Borgia Parish, but also had been a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Hubert, Friedolin and Alfonse Durchholz; and his wife, Josephine Durchholz.

Mr. Durchholz is survived by one son, Eric Durchholz and wife Annette, Washington; one daughter, Marian Zoeller and husband David, Oakville; one sister, Elfriede Boehm and husband Sixtus, Germany; one sister-in-law; three grandchildren, Dan Durchholz and wife Mary Ellen, Wildwood, Kurt Zoeller and wife Johanna, Chesterfield, and Laura Westphale and husband Mark, Kirkwood; six great-grandchildren, Wolfgang, Hans, Stefan and Eva Durchholz, and Joshua and Jacqueline Zoeller; nieces; nephews; many friends and relatives in Germany; other relatives and many friends here.

A funeral Mass for Mr. Durchholz was held Tuesday, July 3, at St. Francis Borgia Church with Rev. Patrick Christopher officiating.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

Memorials to the Washington Historical Society, American Diabetes Association, or the Elks Building Fund are preferred.
