John served in the Civil War with Company K, 13th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, known as "The Tredway Rifles." The 13th was the only Wisconsin regiment to muster at Camp Tredway, in Janesville, which is the current site of the Rock County Fairgrounds. Company K was recruited primarily from Rock, Walworth, and Green Counties, but mostly from Rock County.

John was discharged due to illness. He returned home to Cooksville, still ill, and died at home with his family at their farm on the corner of Stebbinsville Road and Highway 138. The house was on the NE Corner of the intersection. It was torn down around 1998, which was probably necessary because it was in a very poor state and dangerous.

A photo of the house can be found in a book by Rock County historian Maurice Montgomery on old homes in Rock County.
