Charles Ernest Acuff, 78, of Conway, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 10, 2004) at Conway Regional Medical Center.
Born June 25, 1925, in Arkadelphia, he was the son of the late Rev. E.H. and Nettie Johnson Acuff.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Acuff, George Acuff, Eldon Acuff, and two sisters, Wavis Caldwell and Mable Acuff.
Mr. Acuff received his bachelor of arts degree in 1948 from the Ouachita College (OBU), with a major in health and physical education, and his master of arts in 1949 at the George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., with a major in physical education. He received his post master of arts in 1957 at the George Peabody College, majoring in educational administration and special education, and completed two doctoral programs from the George Peabody College and the University of Arkansas.
He was a World War II Navy Air Corps veteran and a member of Conway First Baptist Church. He was a former superintendent at Conway Human Development Center (CHDC), commissioner of the Arkansas Mental Retardation-Developmental Disabilities Services (MR-DDS), special education supervisor for the state Department of Education, and consultant for the President's Commission on Mental Retardation. Before moving to Arkansas, he was the director of Mental Retardation for the state of Kentucky.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Czarina (Howard) Acuff of Conway; five daughters, Belinda McKee and husband, Bill, of Benton, Cherri Wilson and husband, Chad, of Conway, Cindy Massarelli and husband, Rocky, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Carol Armijo of Conway, and Chrissy Denton and husband, Craig, of Conway; 11 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, Ryan McKee, Lauren McKee, Brittany Burns, Bruce Burns, April Wilson, Chad Wilson II, Corey Ledbetter, Callie Massarelli, Lynnlee Massarelli, Charity Armijo, Hart Denton, Paten Czarina Denton, and Haze Denton; two nieces, Margaret Jane Timme, Pat Struthers; and one nephew, Roger Dale Caldwell.
Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at Conway First Baptist Church with Dr. R. Dale Wicker, Jr. officiating. Entombment will be in Crestlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be the grandsons and sons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be Butch Patrick and the Fellowship Adult Sunday School Class of Conway First Baptist Church.
