George Hellrigle was born 7 June 1790 as Johann Georg Hellriegel in Otterberg, Pfalz, Germany, to Daniel Hellriegel and his wife Katherina Barbara Wernz. The family lived at Reichenbacher Hof, a small place, in the parish of Otterberg in the Kaiserslauter District. George was baptised in the Otterberg Evangelical Church on 10 June 1790. The surname Hellrigle (spelling on the monument) was spelled Hellriegel in German records and has been spelled in many variant forms in Canada and the United States (such as Helrigel).

He married Barbara Scherer in the Katzweiler Reformed Evangelical Church on 25 June 1821 at Katzweiler, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany: "Johann Georg Hellriegel, single, a shoemaker, son of the deceased Daniel Hellriegel and his widow Barbara Wernz; and Barbara Scherer, single, the daughter of the deceased Theobald Scherer and his widow Maria Elisabetha Hellriegel, all of Katzweiler." George and Barbara came to America with their children in 1840, time consumed in voyage 45 days. Owing to Barbara's illness they stayed in New York City two months then went to Buffalo where they lived two years before removing to Waterloo County, Ontario, where they settled in North Dumfries Township in the area that was known as Roseville. George was a shoemaker and they were German Lutherans.

The Passenger List from the German ship, "Elisha Denison", which arrived in New York harbor on 20 July 1840 listed George Helligrel (49) traveling with his wife, Barbara (49) and children Wilhelm (18), Heinrich (16), George (12), and Elisabeth (9). The "Elisha Denison" sailed from Le Havre, France where the Helrigel family traveled to by boat from their farm in Katzweiler, Germany.
