Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 pm on Thursday, March 1, 2012, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Alois ("Al") Joseph Lauer, 85, of St. Cloud and formerly of Staples, who died on Sunday, February 26, at the St. Cloud Hospital. Reverend Alan Wielinski will officiate. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery, St. Cloud.

The St. Cloud Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Father Pierz Assembly #0530, will stand honor guard from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday. Parish prayers will be at 6:00 pm and the Knights of Columbus will pray at 6:30 pm.

Al was born in Farming, Minnesota, on July 26, 1926, to Christian John and Barbara (Wilms) Lauer, the seventh of nine children. He was raised on a farm where he learned an appreciation for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing that continued throughout his life.

Al married Alice Mary Torborg on October 29, 1955, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, in Richmond. Minnesota. They had seven children together: Joe (Kathy), Waunakee, WI; Mary, South Saint Paul; John, Little Falls; Kathy McLaughlin (Fran), Maple Grove; Terry (Tamara), Minneapolis; Mark (Barbara), Portland, OR; and Mike (Kathy), Golden Valley. He has 14 grandchildren.

Al attended high school at the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture graduating in 1944. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1951, and received his Master of Arts degree in 1965. He worked as a teacher in high school and adult vocational educational programs, and was an FFA advisor to many students. Al received state and national honorary FFA American Farmer degrees. After retirement, Al was active in numerous volunteer and service organizations including: AARP Tax Aide, 55 Alive, and the Bluebird Recovery program. He was a member of the Waite Park American Legion Post #428 and the St. Cloud Eagles Aerie #622.

Al lived for his family and enjoyed many friends. He passed on to his family his faith and an appreciation of nature. He taught them how to value family and to love, and showed them the importance of hard work and having fun.

Al died as the result of a brain hemorrhage following a fall while taking his daily walk. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brothers Clarence, Art, Romie, and Walter; brother-in-law, Ted Gram; and his sisters-in-law Marie (Spanier), Marie (Thome), Rita (Athmann), Anne (Biermann), and Hilde (Silvers).
