Volcanologist. He saw his first volcano when he was ten years old and later studied geology at the University of Strasbourg where he met his wife Katia. They constantly traveled all over the world to study erupting volcanoes. While Katia photographed, he filmed the volcanoes. They always had their equipment packed, so they could leave as soon as they got news of another eruption. They always rented a helicopter to fly around the volcano to estimate the risk for pyroclastic flows before climbing the volcano. They filmed Mount St Helens shortly before and after the eruption. They toured three months each year through France to show their movies and pictures to have enough money to travel to volcanoes for the rest of the year. Maurice left more than 800 hours of film from 128 volcanoes and 5 TV documentaries. Upon a request of the UNESCO, he did a movie about risks of erupting volcanoes. The couple wanted to travel over Paris to their home when they got the news about the eruption of Mount Unzen. Once there, they were unable to rent a helicopter, because all were used by reporters. Two weeks later Mount Pinatubo erupted. 20.000 people, that would have been in the way of the pyroclastic flows were evacuated after the Filipino officials, responsible for the evacuation, had been shown the video he had done for the UNESCO. Cause of death: pyroclastic flow at Mount Unzen, Kyushu, Japan
