The establishment of the congregation of Independents in this town is stated to be through the efforts of the Rev. Henry Willes, M.A. who is characterised by Calamy as "an able scholar, a considerable mathematician, and of great skill in the law; an eminent preacher, and of a most engaging carriage". From a variety of circumstances, it is pretty evident that Mr. Willes preached to the people who originally assembled in a place of worship on the site of Mr. Beale's present warehouse, and afterward, in conjunction with the celebrated Rev. Vincent Alsop, M.A., founded Cheese-lane Chapel.
The present is a particularly neat edifice, standing in a retired situation, and yet not far from the principal part of the town. Its dimensions are nearly as follow: 50 ft. by 40. It is surrounded, in three divisions, by a capacious gallery. The pulpit is large and nicely inlaid with ornament, possessing a handsomely carved back-board. Fronting the pulpit, in the gallery, is a small organ, proving alike ornamental and useful; below which, attached to the gallery panelling, is a clock, signifying the expiration of each hour by a single strike. The burial ground attached to the chapel commands an extensive and delightful prospect.
The succession of ministers has been in the following order: Rev Mr Orton; Rev T. Thomas; Rev. Henry Summers; Rev. R. Jacomb; Rev D. Washbourn; Rev. J. Robertson, the present minister. Times of service: Sunday, half-past ten in the morning, and two in the afternoon. Second and third Sundays in each month, at six in the evening.
MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS found inside the church were taken in 1837 and noted in this book.
