John Beard and Ellen Cooper were married on April 28, 1842 in Randolph County, Indiana. The family relocated from Indiana to Henry County, Iowa, between 1845 and 1850.

In 1862, the family came to Florence, Nebraska, and three years later they came to Washington county, homesteading seven miles north of what would later become Blair. John, Ellen, and family were amongst the first pioneers to come to this area.

John passed away in 1871, and Ellen remarried to Samuel Hahn on 4/13/1875 in Washington County, Nebraska. It is presently unclear what became of Samuel, but in both 1880 and 1885, he is not present in the family home, even though Ellen is declared as married.
