Leo was the 5th of 10 children, growing up on a farm south of Muenster, Texas, speaking only German until he learned English in school. He always wanted to be a priest and would even play 'priest' conducting play mass and play funerals with his sisters. After graduating from Sacred Heart Grade School in 1927, he entered Subiaco Academy in Subiaco, Arkansas, and graduated from the Academy in May of 1931. He was very active in sports in these years, receiving the Loving Cup twice for best all-around athlete. He also excelled in music, playing the trombone in the band, and other instruments, but his violin playing was his greatest accomplishment. All his studies proved admirable.

Leo entered the novitiate of Subiaco Abbey and became Frater in September of 1932, taking the name of Alfred. His father and two siblings, Alphonse and Emma was there for this occasion. Leo had received a scholarship to continue his college education. These years of education were not easy, as his Papa died in 1933. His brothers and sisters worked hard and stayed together on the farm so his desire to become a priest could be fulfilled, as well as to make the payments on the farm. All his family was so proud to have a priest in the family. He was ordained a priest on May 26, 1938 in Little Rock, arkansas by Bishop Albert L. Fletcher, D.D.

Father Alfred was elected Father Abbot the first abbot of the first Benedictine Abbey in Texas on Sept. 2, 1961.
On Nov 1, 1988 Fr Alred celebrated his Golden Jubilee at Sacred Heart Church and a reception followed for the whole parish.

At 82, he had his fifth heart attack while vacationing in Arkansas. He was laid to rest in a wooden box hand made by one of his peers, and placed in a masoleum at the Corpus Christi Abbey in Sandia, Texas.

When the Abbey was sold, his body was moved to the Bendictine Abbey in Arkansas.
