John came to Prescott, Wisconsin at an early age. He studied law in the office of Senator Spooner. He was elected district attorney of Barron County, Wisconsin in 1876. In 1883 he went to Saint Paul, and became a member of the Erwin, Ives and Ryan firm and afterward was head of the Ives and Zollman firm. In 1889 and 1893, John was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives and in 1899, was elected to the Minnesota Senate.
