OBITUARY.
MRS J. H. RULE. A former resident of Ashburton, Mrs J. H. Rule, died at Geraldine last week. Born at Churchstoke, Montgomeryshire, Wales, in 1870, Mrs Rule was the second daughter of Mr and Mrs James Stringfellow, of Ashburton. She was only four years of age when she arrived in New Zealand with her parents in the Eastern Monarch. Mr and Mrs Stringfellow settled on Banks Peninsula, and then moved to Pendarves. Mr Stringfellow later farmed at Chertsey, where his daughter's marriage to Mr Rule took place in 1900. Mr and Mrs Rule lived in Ashburton for several years, and in 1914 moved to Geraldine, where Mrs Rule took a keen interest in Red Cross work during the War. One of the foundation members of the Geraldine Croquet Club, Mrs Rule was later elected a life member. Mrs Rule was also a member of the St. Mary's Mothers' Union and the Geraldine branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs G. Adams (Ashburton), and Misses Clarice and Thelma Rule, and, one son, Mr William Rule, all of Geraldine. [Ashburton Guardian, Volume 57, Issue 9, 21 October 1936, Page 6]
