Mary Belle (Gable) Meyers, passed away peacefully on the evening of August 9, 2016, at the Hospice and Community Care facility in Mount Joy, PA.

She was born in Hegins, PA, September 23, 1922, to Tearl and Florence (née Klouser) Gable.

Mary and her husband Jim were married on October 6, 1944 and their loving relationship continued for sixty-eight years until Jim's death on May 2, 2012.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, The Rev. H. James Meyers, her daughter Ann Louise (Kelin) Meyers, her parents, and her siblings Naomi Hand, and Daniel Gable.

She is survived by three children, nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Mary graduated from Hegins Township High School (PA) in 1940 and was one of the few women accepted to the University of Pennsylvania's class of 1944.

She was unable to attend Penn because of personal reasons and began work as a clerk in the Hegins post office.

Her earlier work experience as a high school student was in her uncle's drug store in Valley View PA, where her eagerness to serve endeared her to the clientele.

Mary shared many amusing stories with her family about those days behind the soda fountain and pharmacy counters.

Much later in her life she acted upon her sense of independence and adventure and took a summer job as a sales associate with the Nature Company in Jackson Hole Wyoming, where she lived in a one-room apartment with her granddaughter and cat Fritz.

Mary met her husband Jim at the Valley View Church of God where Jim was called as a pastor in 1943.

As Jim was called to subsequent pastorates, she moved her family to Middletown, PA in 1951 (Middletown Church of God), Columbia, PA in 1957 (St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church), and Somerset, PA in 1969 (Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church) where she lived until moving back to Columbia PA in 2008 with her husband as a resident at the St. John Herr Estates.

Mary gave her life in service to her family, but she never wanted praise for what she firmly believed was her calling.

Just a few days before her death, we told her what a wonderful Mom she has been through all of these years, and her response was that it wasn't her, but rather that it took all of us to raise our family.

In truth, however, she has always been the loving and silently powerful force that has held us together.

She was fiercely loyal to all of us and as times changed, as our family situations changed, she readily adapted and grew along with us with a depth of love and understanding that we will never take for granted.

She very rarely complained, even through the struggles and the pain of afflictions that she suffered later in her life.

She took upon herself the task of worrying for all of us. We have all become more loving and stronger people because of her love and affection, given freely and without any expectations of return for herself.

A family graveside service for Mom will be held in the Hegins-Valley View Cemetery later this year.

Meanwhile, those who wish to send cards of remembrance may address them to Connie Schmotzer, 751 Hillcrest Rd., York PA.

Contributions in honor of Mary's life can be made to Hospice and Community Care, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount Joy, PA.
