Wilfred Joseph Sylvester was born the son of Edmond and Hermina D Sylvester on February 26, 1892, in Ville Platte, Louisiana.

He was one of several children born to them. According to the 1910 Federal census, the family was living in Police Jury Ward 1, Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana. Wilfred (entered as Wilford) was 18 at the time. His siblings were:

Oscor Sylvester aged 20
Sherley Sylvester aged 15
Stella Sylvester aged 12
Eula Sylvester aged 11

Wilfred Sylvester served from in Co. H, 348th Inf., 87th Division in the U.S. Army from September 18, 1917 until he was honorably discharged on July 3, 1991 with the rank of private first class.

OBITUARY: Wilfred Sylvester of Opelousas Dies at Alexandria

Wilfred Sylvester, 71, of Opelousas, died at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Alexandria, following an illness of three weeks.

He was born Feb. 26, 1892, in Ville Platte. He had resided in Opelousas most of his life. Sylvester was a retired painter and paper hanger.

His body is at Lafond and Son Funeral home, where the rosary will be recited at 8 tonight. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Burial will be in Bellevue Memorial Park.

Sylvester was a member of Knights of Columbus council 3409, the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts.

He is survived by his wife, the former Olivia Lafleur of Opelousas; two sons, Father Wilfred Sylvester of Hathaway and another son of Opelousas; and six daughters: the first daughter of Athens, Ga.; a second daughter of Vandalia, Mo.; a third daughter of Marksville; a fourth daughter of Houston, Tex.; a fifth daughter of Pasadena, Tex.; and a sixth daughter of Opelousas.

Other survivors are one brother, Shirley Sylvester of Denver, Colo.; three sisters: Mrs. Henry Dominique and Mrs. Giles Deshotels, Sr.; both of Opelousas; and Mrs. Joe Rieley of Denver; and 26 grandchildren.

Members of Our Lady of Mercy K.C. council 3409 will recite a rosary at the funeral home at 8:30 tonight.
