Novelist. She was born the daughter of a railroad worker and a homemaker. After attending Washington University, she moved to California with her new husband who was in the Air Force. For the next twenty years, as a homemaker she served as President of the Long Beach Civic Light Opera and chair of the Long Beach Heart Association. When her son started making films in the 70s, she joined in and coordinated the special effects for his film "Phantasm" in 1979. She served as executive producer on his films "Kenny and Company," and "Jim, the World's Greatest." She began to write in 1981 and her first novel "Fame and Fortune" made the New York Times and Los Angeles Times bestseller lists. All of her novels revolved around the same theme, reflecting women in various stages of their lives, as in "Pretty Women," "Leading Lady," "Heir Apparent," "Perfect Order" and "Living Color." Although diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 1992, she continued to write until her death.
