Asa was born in Indiana but the family relocated to Iowa when he was young. He married Esther Walton in 1857, and volunteered with the 25th Iowa infantry to serve in the war between the states. Immediately following the battle at Vicksburg, Mississippi, Asa died in the regimental hospital of 'congestive fever.'
