Daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth Clarke. Wife of John Grosvenor, married c 1672 in Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA.

John Grosvenor, the earliest representative of the family in New England and the progenitor of all who bear the name in America, was born in 1641, and died in 1691 in Roxbury, Massachusetts, where his burial occurred. His wife, Esther Clark [aka: Clarke] Grosvenor, a woman of great strength of character and self-reliance, came with her family, consisting of five sons and one daughter, to Pomfret, where she engaged in the management of her landed property, and added the practice of medicine to her other attainments.

John's pilgrimage to Pomfret, his return to Roxbury, his death in 1691, the journey in 1701 of his widow and sons to complete the purchase, the allotment of lands, the widow's death in the old Sabin home are well-known facts in Pomfret history. The story is told of John's widow Esther that a troublesome squaw once invaded her kitchen, demanding immediate supply of food and even attempting to snatch the boiled meat from the kettle. Mrs. Grosvenor held her back with her broomstick till her son Ebenezer came to her rescue.
